Linear Drain vs Centre Square Drain

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LINEAR DRAINS AND CENTRE SQUARE DRAINS ?

In this article we explore the differences between the linear drains and the more traditional centre square drains. Both types are very obviously designed to drain water however there are many details that separate them. The centre drain ( also known as a square drain or round drain ) features an outlet normally between 50mm and 110mm that connects directly into the trap or groundwork pipe.
Linear drains are sleek and make styling your project simple. Linear drains have always been a strong weapon to drain the water, but products like Aquabocci’s S66 linear drain takes that to a new level.
Designed for the minimalists, the varied thicknesses and widths combined with the 4 stunning colour ways are a surefire win. The 9 product selection is near impossible to style badly and gives you unlimited design opportunities for your project.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A LINEAL DRAIN OVER CENTRE SQUARE DRAINS ?

Its a well known industry narrative: Linear drains are versatile allow unlimited design and water flow opportunities, centre drains require you to cut the tiles and create a bowl so that the water falls in the direction of the centre drain, so not ideal for the design conscience consumer. Linear drains like the Aquabocci S66 are supplied in standard lengths of 1200mm and 2400mm and can be joined to corner pcs to create any length or shapes. The Aquabocci S66 profile is only 43mm deep and has been designed to fit within the screed of the tile bed. By using a linear drain you can install large tiles or slabs and slope them towards the lineal drain without the need for unsightly wedge tiles cuts.

HOW DO I CHOOSE BETWEEN THE LINEAR DRAIN OR CENTRE DRAIN FOR MY PROJECT?
The challenge often hinges on the design factor, ie: Centre drains are what they say on the box, they are installed in the centre with wedge cut tiles. Another consideration is that centre drains have one outlet so the only way to increase the flow rate is to install more centre drains which will result in more wedge tile cuts.
Centre drains have the option of a tile insert or a grate however the limited flow rate must be taken into account when planning your design.
A linear drain can be installed along the edge or through the centre of the tiles.
Following the increased popularity of the lineal drain, there are now many products for you to select for your project. Aquabocci’s linear drain range comprises 9 profiles released from 2011 to 2019.
All eyes have been on Aquabocci's fast assembly fitting system that screws straight lengths and corners pcs together to create unlimited shapes, and to increase the flow rate then you just add more spigot outlets to the bottom of the channel.

DO LINEAR DRAINS HAVE A BIGGER FLOW RATE THAN CENTRE DRAINS?
In addition to creating a sleek modern look, the challenge is what look do I want for my project and most importantly what flow rate do I require. Let's say you have a 60sqm courtyard or balcony and you want to avoid wedge tile cuts, you could slope large format tiles away from the property to a linear drain like the Aquabocci A30 that features a 120mm wide grate, both products have a 120mm wide channel so you can install large spigots to discharge the water to create the maximum flow rate.  To play is safe on a 15 metre long linear drain, it would be best to install at least 6 outlets of 110mm spaced evenly along the channel, and even more if you feel the need to increase the flow rate even more.  Better yet, perhaps you want a flush finish from your interior to exterior, this creates new design opportunities that allow you to create the ultimate inside to out flush finish.
Centre drains on the other hand are limited to a small flow rate with only one outlet.

WHERE CAN I USE A LINEAR DRAIN OR CENTRE DRAIN FOR MY PROJECT?

Both linear drains and centre drains can be use internally or external.  Lets begin with the obvious features of each and then you can decide if those features will suit your application. Linear drains can be installed along walls or in any location within the tiled area giving you the option to slope large tiles towards the linear drain without the need to cut the tiles at angles. Centre drains on the other hand can be installed in any location within the tiles however you do require wedge tile cuts towards the centre drain.
